As we get older, it becomes even more crucial to take good care of our teeth and dental health. Yet one common misnomer is that losing your teeth is inevitable. This is not true. Your teeth can last a lifetime if cared for properly.
Due to advances in modern dentistry, more prevalent oral care education, and the greater availability toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouthwash, a larger number of older adults are keeping their natural teeth for a much longer period of time. That being said, it is necessary to remember that keeping your teeth in good condition as you age may require some special attention.
It’s no secret that your mouth changes as you age. Also, the nerves in your teeth can shrink, making your teeth less sensitive to cavities or other problems. This in turn can lead to problems not being diagnosed until it is too late.
Age itself is not a leading or sole factor in determining oral health; however, certain medical conditions, such as arthritis, may make brushing or flossing teeth difficult to difficult to perform.
Here Are a Few Tips for Maintaining and Improving Your Oral Health as You Age (mouthhealth.org)
- Brush twice a day with a toothbrush with soft bristles. You may also benefit from using an electric toothbrush.
- Clean between your teeth once a day with floss or another flossing tool.
- If you wear full or partial dentures, remember to clean them on a daily basis. Take your dentures out of your mouth for at least four hours every day. It’s best to remove them at night.
- Drink tap water. Since most contains fluoride, it helps prevent tooth decay no matter how old you are.
- Quit smoking. Besides putting you at greater risk for lung and other cancers, smoking increases problems with gum disease, tooth decay and tooth loss.
- Visit your dentist. Visit your dentist regularly for a complete dental check-up.
